TRAINING ACTIVE BYSTANDERS (TAB) is a unique and innovative evidence-based program. It promotes leadership and positive connections while significantly reducing violence and other harm doing (a 20% difference in middle and high schools compared to control schools). Studies show that 85% of people are bystanders and, as bystanders, have considerable power. TAB heightens awareness of bystanders’ power, teaches when passivity becomes complicity, how bystanders can interrupt harm doing and generate positive actions by others. TAB emphasizes that active bystandership does not mean aggression against the harm doer. It promotes support for the target, responsibility for others, caring for those inside and outside one's own group, moral courage and competencies to safely help those in need.

Active Bystanders’ Training:

Creating Safety in Contentious Times

If you are a bystander witnessing a harmful situation, you have a choice to make. Do you do something? What do you do?

Training Active Bystanders (TAB) was developed by Quabbin Mediation of Orange, MA. TAB helps participants recognize when they are bystanders, analyze situations, and evaluate the consequences for everyone involved. TAB heightens bystanders’ power. It teaches how bystanders can interrupt harm doing and generate positive actions by others. Active bystandership does not mean aggression against the harm doer. It means taking responsible action to help people in need instead of remaining passive and becoming complicit. Bystanders gain the competencies they need if they decide to take action when they witness something they feel is unfair, or wrong, or troubling.

Two-Hour Workshop Content

The TAB curriculum covers the following:

  • Defines the roles of individuals involved in a harmful situation (target, harm doer, bystander) and assists participants in discovering the positive power of bystanders;
  • Reveals the universal inhibitors that lead to inaction on the part of bystanders and witnesses when harmful actions are going on and discusses how to overcome them;
  • Examines the promoters of active bystandership (moral courage, inclusive caring, responsibility for others, etc.);
  • Stresses safety and helps participants develop a variety of intervention techniques;
  • Helps participants create action plans to break the inhibitors in the future when they encounter harm doing.

Instruction Style

Lessons are interactive, using large and small group activities, brainstorming and role plays. The power of TAB comes from the way the program becomes, through conversation, specifically relevant to participants’ lives.

TAB is taught by peers to their communities. This makes the TAB message powerfully relevant and easily replicable in diverse settings since trainers are of the culture in which they teach. Each group walks away from that experience with a changed and empowered vision of an individual’s role in creating a supportive and engaged community. Minimum number of participants is 10 people. TAB is appropriate for anyone 12 years old and older.

TRAINING FOR FACILITATORS OF THE TWO-HOUR WORKSHOP

TAB uses a Training for Trainers model. This promotes leadership and supports broad and rapid implementation in which thousands are trained annually. TAB is easily replicable in different cultural and age-diverse settings because trainers are of the culture in which they teach.

During this day-long session, those who have participated in the two-hour workshop learn to facilitate it. In pairs, facilitators can then teach the workshop paired with any other trained facilitator.

TRAINING FOR INSTRUCTORS

Particularly talented and experienced TAB trainers are invited to become Instructors, people who work with Quabbin Mediation to train TAB trainers.

SIX-HOUR TRAINING

The six-unit training builds on the concepts introduced in the two-hour seminar. We define harm doing, the factors inhibiting bystanders from taking action against harm; the factors, including moral courage, which promote active bystandership; and the effects on the target, the harm doer, other bystanders and the community when bystanders do (or do not) interrupt harm doing. Participants practice skills through exercises, role plays and large and small group discussions. Trainees receive a TAB Handbook with unit Information Sheets.

ADVANCED LEVEL I

This first-level advanced, four-unit curriculum reviews TAB concepts and analyzes them using current and historical events. For example, one lesson examines the efforts to stop lynching in the U.S., showing the positive evolution of values over 100 years.

ADVANCED LEVEL II

This second-level advanced curriculum focuses in depth on targeted populations (for example, people with different abilities, gender identity, transgender, sexual orientation, race, class, size, etc.), discusses why they are targets, and how to intervene.

SPANISH LANGUAGE TAB

The basic TAB curriculum is in Spanish.

TAB FOR HIGH NEEDS STUDENTS

This specialized TAB curriculum teaches youth facing significant challenges how to teach TAB to their peers. Staff is also available to teach the specialized Basic curriculum.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TAB

There are two elementary curricula, for grades 1-3 and for grades 4-6. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and introduces concepts they will revisit as they move through elementary and secondary school.

TAB FOR YOUTH GROUPS, CAMPS

Youth TAB trainers, working with their community adult trainer partners or with staff, present to scouting and sports organizations, youth groups in houses of worship, and to summer camp youth and camp counselors.

TAB IN HIGHER EDUCATION

TAB has been taught at MIT and Mt. Holyoke College, and in many community colleges, to undergraduates, graduate students, professors and administrators. In community colleges, where the students often have job and family responsibilities, and some are the first in their families to attend college, student retention is a concern. Students feel a greater sense of belonging and feel safer after the introduction of TAB. A number of TAB trainers, on graduating high school, continue as adult trainers.

 

TAB IN THE WORKPLACE

TAB has been implemented as a means of transforming the workplace to a norm in which harm doing is not acceptable. Active bystandership, in response to harmful actions, leads to more positive interactions among people. It creates an improved workplace atmosphere where all employees feel safe. This contributes to workplace productivity.

TAB promotes collaborative team building skills, engenders a sense of competence, strong leadership skills, and a sense of commitment to the organization. The program substantially reduces costs for conflict management, mediation or litigation.

TAB IN PRISON AND JAIL

TAB has been taught at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Norfolk to 70 members of the Lifers’ Group in that prison. It has also been taught in the minimum security section of the Franklin County (MA) House of Corrections to 60 inmates slated transition back to the community.
